《A History of Greek Fire and Gunpowder》摘录

A number of other recipes for magic lamps, using various materials, appear all together as if taken from some treatise on that subject. Then follow a number of pyrotechnic recipes, but as these are interrupted by some more magic lamps they probably came from the same work as the above. Some of the recipes are very similar to those in the Liber Ignium of Marcus Gr^cus (whose name is not mentioned) and some (apart from slight differences in wording) are identical. The proportions of the ingredients are, however, ojj"ted except in the gunpowder recipe

If you will make a contrary, that is an image of a man or any other thing which when it is put in water is inflamed and when it is taken out of it is extinguished, take quicklime and mix it with a little wax, and sesame oil, and naphtha, and white earth, and make an image of it, which when you sprinkle it with water will inflame

If you will carry fire in your hand so that it is not injured, take lime slaked in hot bean-water and a little mallow, and mix them well together. Then anoint the palm of your hand with it and let it dry, and put fire in it and it will not be injured. The philosophers say that talc is not burnt in fire and fish-glue preserves from fire, and Yaman alum, and blood of the salamander, and soot of the furnace or cauldron, when you make a liniment from them all or some of them, fire does not hurt

3. Lay two or three corns of Gunpowder upon a white piece of paper, the one three fingers distant from the other, and put fire to one of them, if the powder be good and strong, you shall see them all on fire at once, and that there will remain no grossness of 'Brimstone or of Saltpeter, no not any thing but a white smoky colour in the place where they were burned, neither will the paper be touched.

4.If good Gunpowder be laidupon the palm of your hand, and set on fire, you will not be burned.
